BFBS Wins A Sony Award
BFBS Wins A Sony Award

BFBS has won one of the most prestigious radio awards on the planet.  The Sony Radio Academy Awards are the radio industry's equivalent of the Oscars and BFBS is the proud recipient of the 2010 Special Award for Outstanding Achievement.

The award was presented by Chris Evans at London's Grosvenor House Hotel at the annual celebration of the best of British radio and reflects the role of BFBS in keeping British Forces personnel and their families in touch with home and with each other since 1943.

The Chairman of the Sony Radio Academy Awards, Tim Blackmore, said:

"This award is being made to an organisation whose origins lie in the latter years of the Second World War - an organisation that has not only served its target audience with legendary success, but has also launched the broadcasting careers of dozens of our most respected radio stars.

This is an award that celebrates the work of radio professionals not just here in the UK, but in most of the territories in which British Forces are currently serving. From its headquarters in Chalfont St Peter - presenters, journalists and technicians are sent to stations as far apart as Belize, Brunei, Canada, Cyprus. the Falkland Islands, Germany, Gibraltar, Northern Ireland and Afghanistan

For those in a war zone, it's work that involves the kind of threats that most of us never have to experience.  But their task is to meet the broadcasting needs of our soldiers, sailors and airmen. It's a task that means they have to understand the realities of service life and that means being where the troops themselves are serving.

Now, with their main service being available across the UK on DAB, they provide a unique and impressive link between those serving abroad and their families here at home. It is indeed a very special kind of radio.

In recognition of more than sixty years of radio broadcasting, but in particular for its current commitment to our serving men and women both on, and behind, the front lines of international conflict, the Sony Radio Academy Awards salutes the outstanding achievements of BFBS Radio - The British Forces Broadcasting Service."

We're honoured to accept this award on behalf of our unique audience.  It's as much for you as it is for us.
