BFBS Radio is immensely proud of its links with the Brigade of Gurkhas, which date back to the Malayan Crisis when BFBS Singapore broadcast messages to Gurkhas serving 'up country'. More than half a century later, the BFBS Gurkha Radio network covers three main bases, in the UK, Nepal and Brunei, with coverage in Afghanistan and Iraq for Gurkhas on operations.
BFBS Gurkha Radio UK broadcasts live from our studios in Shorncliffe to Gurkhas in nine different locations in the UK, from Brecon to Stafford. We also have studios in Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, and in Seria, Brunei, currently home of the First Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles. Because of the time differences between UK, Nepal and Brunei, live programmes from all three countries can be heard throughout the day on BFBS Gurkha Radio.
The main role of BFBS Gurkha Radio remains to provide a link with home in Nepal for soldiers and their families. Transmitters in Afghanistan and Iraq also provide a vital link for soldiers on the front line, some of whom are appointed by their units to be BFBS representatives. We are also currently providing BFBS Gurkha Radio programmes at BATUS in Canada for Gurkhas on training exercises.
We broadcast Nepalese news, current affairs, family favourites, interviews and traditional programmes, as well as patriotic, devotional and Hindi music. Competitions, women's programmes, children's programmes, requests and dedications run alongside poetry recitals, story telling and religious programmes. We also do live phone-in programmes where Gurkha soldiers and their families and soldiers serving all over the world can dedicate messages and songs to their loved ones.
BFBS Gurkha Radio is proud to be an essential part of the worldwide Gurkha community. |
